Rock the Vote, founded in 1990 in response to a wave of attacks on freedom of speech and artistic expression, coordinates voter registration drives, get out the vote events, and voter education efforts -- all with the intention of building political power for our nation's youth and leveraging that political power to influence change in our country. Our work doesn't end when the polls close. We empower young people to create necessary change in their communities and stand up for the values they hold including diversity, tolerance, and freedom of expression. And we continue to fight to make sure that their voices are heard in Washington by politicians on both sides of the aisle, leading voters under 30 in the fight for our basic rights as citizens of this democracy, equal participation in the voting process, and equal representation by those we elect.

Springfield College Rocks The Vote

Susan L. Cunningham, left, a Springfield College sophomore, looks on as Evan M. Christner 18, from Albany New York, an incoming freshman at the school, signs forms as he checked in for his dorm and registered to vote.

SPRINGFIELD - In between rocking their iMacs and brand new dorm gear, incoming freshmen at Springfield College were encouraged to Rock the Vote.

Droves of new students arriving at the campus on Friday were urged to register to vote as they checked in at their residence halls.

"I would have done it earlier, but I've just been so busy these last couple of months," said 18-year-old Evan M. Christner of Albany, N.Y., who was checking in at Gulick Hall, the largest freshman dorm on campus

"It was easy to get it over with here," he said.

College officials said they expected a little more than 600 freshmen to check in Friday morning and were planning to make similar pitches to unregistered upperclassmen on Sunday and members of the sports teams.

"The goal is to get 100 percent of our students registered," said David G. Braverman, vice president of student affairs. "This is about civic engagement. It's not about power and control. It's about quality of life for everyone."

If the college succeeds at getting full compliance from its student body, officials said they believe it will be the first campus in the country to do it.

The idea was the product of a brainstorm by faculty and staff members last spring, and was buoyed by U.S. Sen. and then-presidential hopeful, Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-NY, who spoke at the campus in late January.

The registration drive is part of a larger "Rock the Vote" push at the college, which will host a voter education series starting in late September and running through October.

Scheduled topics for discussion include the Iraq war, the environment, the economy, education and health care. Braverman said the intent is to expose students to both sides of each issue and let them arrive at their own philosophies.

Meaghan A. Roy, a health educator at the college, said staff plan to build an intellectual momentum leading up to the general election in November.

"We're hoping to build their excitement around the issues and hopefully they'll want to do something about that when the election comes," Roy said.

Rockin' the Vote before age 18

Rockin' the Vote before age 18
By Karen Jeffrey
kjeffrey@capecodonline.com
August 15, 2008 6:00 AM

Mark Raymond won't turn 18 until December, and that's a bit of a frustration for him.

He's eager to vote.

The same is true of Adrianne "Andie" Ramirez, 16, who has two more years before she can mark a ballot.

But these two young people, along with a host of friends, are eagerly translating their non-voting status and interest in politics into a project that could put a smile on town clerks across the Cape — early voter registration.

Starting today, a small army of teens — most of whom won't be eligible to vote this year — will run voter registration drives on the Mid- and Lower Cape. Later this month, Raymond will become a familiar sight, registering voters in Hyannis when town Democrats open a campaign headquarters there within the next several weeks.

"I can't vote this time, but I want to see as many people participate in the process as possible," said Raymond, who will be a senior at Barnstable High School this fall.

"I think Obama has generated a lot of interest in the presidential election, but it's also really important for people to vote in the state and local elections. Those probably have a more direct impact on our lives," he said.

Ramirez, who will be a junior this year at Harwich High School, said youth need to get involved regardless if they are old enough to vote. "We have to make ourselves heard, and we have to express our interest and opinions on issues like Darfur and the Sudan," she said.

The youth-run voter registration drives being held this weekend and throughout the summer are in part the brain-child of Harwich resident John Bangert, who emphasized that the registration drives are non-partisan. He anticipates a dozen young people to work the registration tables the first weekend and perhaps more as time goes on.

Although aimed at involving young people and registering them, the effort is also about "getting those people who don't vote, regardless of age or party affiliation, to register and to vote," said Bangert, who along with Sharon Stover-Gleason, a special needs teacher in Harwich, and Sheila House, the Harwich town youth counselor, helped organize the Lower Cape teens for the registration project.

"This is a positive way to get kids involved, a way of getting them to participate in the political process, and hopefully a way of getting other young people to register," he said of the Cape's Rock the Vote effort.

Rock the Vote — a non-partisan youth voter registration group founded in 1990 that uses music, technology and popular culture to encourage young people to register and vote — licensed the Cape group to use its logo, press releases and set up a related Web site.

"This is an election that

has excited a lot of young people," said Patrick Prinzi, 34, recently elected chairman of the Barnstable Democratic Town Committee.

"No doubt there are young McCain supporters out there, but among the people I know, there is a sense that Obama is inspiring young people much in the same way John Kennedy inspired a young generation," he said.

Prinzi, who works as a probation officer, said politics has always been a passion of his. He sees a similar passion in young people, including some who recently attended a Barnstable Democratic Town Committee meeting.

"It was pretty impressive that they took the initiative and came to the meeting. They wanted to find out what we do. They are interested in being involved," Prinzi said.

One of those youths was Raymond, who said he came by his interest in politics naturally. "My parents always have those news programs on. We've talked a lot about these things. My parents have very open minds and want me to develop and express my own opinions. And it's my opinion everyone should exercise their right to vote."

ROCKER OF THE MONTH: LINCOLN STEPHENS
Lincoln Stephens
In 2008, Rock the Vote is working with dozens of street team leaders and thousands of volunteers all across the country to register young voters at concerts, on campus, at festivals, in the workplace, and more. Each month, we'll highlight one of these fabulous volunteers through Rock the Vote News.

This month, we're featuring Lincoln Stephens, Rock the Vote Chicago Street Team Leader. (photo, far right)

Lincoln Stephens was born to be involved in some aspect of politics and campaigns. He got his passion for political networking and service via his father's participation in the Texas Republican Party, where he saw successful campaign organizing up close & personal. Not wanting to choose a specific party to publicly support (his mother is a Democrat), Lincoln decided to rally around a cause that has now become his life's passion: empowering youth and inspiring consciousness in the media that we consume.

Lincoln served as a Rock The Vote street team leader in Dallas in 2004 and has returned to get things "rockin'" in 2008. This year, Lincoln is leading the charge in Chicago. Already, he has organized Rock the Vote's Lollapalooza events and begun to mobilize a crew of volunteers who will be taking names and registering voters all over the Windy City in the coming months.

In addition to running Rock the Vote Chicago, Lincoln is an active mentor to the next generation of young voters and in the process of starting a leadership development initiative entitled The Marcus Graham Project, which is focused on diverse talent interested in careers in the media, marketing & advertising industry.

Thanks, Lincoln, for all that you do! Look forward to the next Rock the Vote News to highlight more Rock the Vote super-volunteers this fall.
TALKING POLITICS 2.0

Logo Logo

GenerationEngage and Rock the Vote are cueing up to launch "Talking Politics 2.0," a series of candidate forums where young adults will speak with Senators, Governors, and members of Congress about the country’s future on the eve of the most important election in their lifetimes.

While much attention is focused on the presidential race this year, Talking Politics 2.0 aims to demonstrate how young adults are engaged not only at the national level this election season, but in local and statewide races.

The series, spanning Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Michigan, and California, will bring young people and political leaders together in person and via iChat for Q&A on issues including economic insecurity, immigration, education, the environment, and the war in Iraq.

The series kicks off with a congressional forum in Miami, FL on August 22nd. Candidates for Florida's 25th Congressional District - Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R) and Joe Garcia (D) - are both confirmed to participate.

Stay tuned for more details on Talking Politics 2.0!

"The Year the Youth Vote Arrives," The Washington Post, July 25, 2008
The conventional wisdom on certain subjects is so deeply rooted that no amount of evidence disturbs its hold. That's how it is with those dreary predictions that young Americans just won't vote....[but] the evidence is overwhelming that this year the young really will vote in large numbers -- and they just might tip the election.

"Rock the Vote Targets Young Voters' Clout," Rocky Mountain News, August 4, 2008
If Rock the Vote has anything to say about it, young and first-time voters will play a crucial role in the presidential election.

The band that registers the most voters and wins an online poll will open the Rock the Vote party at the Democratic National Convention on August 25 in Denver.

"Young Democrats Work to Energize the Youth Vote," The Orlando Sun Sentinel, July 29, 2008
Barack Obama has the historic distinction of being the first African-American to win his party's nomination, but the deciding factor in this fall's sure-to-be-nail-biting presidential election may not be race, color or creed but age...'When young people vote, Democrats win,' said Matthew McWatters, 23, vice president of the Palm Beach County Young Democrats. That's the common logic, even as both parties strive to secure the ever-elusive, and always under-represented, youth vote.

The Grand Old Party is trying to attract some young blood to its national convention in September, hoping to offset, as much as possible, the magnetic appeal of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama among young voters.
