| WHAT'S NEW AT ROCK THE VOTE |
RTV at Lollapalooza: Rock the Vote was all over Lollapalooza last weekend. Together with AT&T, we launched the Rock the Vote Mobile Bus Tour, which this summer will visit nearly 50 cities and both the Democratic and Republican Conventions. Inside the bus, concertgoers will be able to register to vote, film their own PSAs, play Rock Band, and more.
At night, Rock the Vote spread the word about our efforts and registered voters while partying with the stars at Lollapalooza. For three nights, Rock the Vote Nights at the Hard Rock Hotel was the place to be with guests including Lindsay Lohan, DJ Samantha Ronson, Ashlee Simpson Wentz, and Pete Wentz (Photo by Seth Browarnik, Red Eye Productions)
DemROCKracy Update: On July 1, Rock the Vote and MySpace launched DemROCKracy, a competition that invites bands with a MySpace page to encourage their fans to register to vote.
So far more than 4,000 bands have joined the competition. Musician Jackie V won the first round - and a Gibson Guitar - registering the most voters in the first two weeks of the competition. The competition closes on August 14th; at that time, fans will have 24 hours to vote for the winner. Check out DemROCKracy here.
Peanuts Fans Rock the Vote: An online mock election debuting this month will invite Peanuts fans to vote for Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy or Sally for President. A first-ever partnership between Peanuts and Rock the Vote offers fans a chance to flex their voting muscles by casting their ballots in an online Peanuts election at http://www.peanutsrocksthevote.com/. Voters in the mock election can review the candidates' bios, read their platforms, cast a vote, and register to vote in the actual 2008 election using Rock the Vote's custom online voter registration tool. Check out http://www.peanutsrocksthevote.com/ for more information.
944 Magazine Partnership: We are excited to announce our partnership with 944 Magazine to motivate young voters in the 2008 election. 944 Magazine will follow “Rock the Trail” journalists and showcase RTV musicians and artists through signature 944 event and initiatives. 944 Magazine will also promote involvement through online registration on 944.com, monthly e-mail newsletters to the 944 national database, RSS feeds, and commercial campaigns all developed to drive voter registration to an all-time high. This fall, 944's October issue will be dedicated to trailblazers and political decision-makers who are rockin’ the vote in their own right, with the spotlight and cover on RTV ambassador Common. | ROCKER OF THE MONTH: LINCOLN STEPHENS |
In 2008, Rock the Vote is working with dozens of street team leaders and thousands of volunteers all across the country to register young voters at concerts, on campus, at festivals, in the workplace, and more. Each month, we'll highlight one of these fabulous volunteers through Rock the Vote News.
This month, we're featuring Lincoln Stephens, Rock the Vote Chicago Street Team Leader. (photo, far right)
Lincoln Stephens was born to be involved in some aspect of politics and campaigns. He got his passion for political networking and service via his father's participation in the Texas Republican Party, where he saw successful campaign organizing up close & personal. Not wanting to choose a specific party to publicly support (his mother is a Democrat), Lincoln decided to rally around a cause that has now become his life's passion: empowering youth and inspiring consciousness in the media that we consume.
Lincoln served as a Rock The Vote street team leader in Dallas in 2004 and has returned to get things "rockin'" in 2008. This year, Lincoln is leading the charge in Chicago. Already, he has organized Rock the Vote's Lollapalooza events and begun to mobilize a crew of volunteers who will be taking names and registering voters all over the Windy City in the coming months.
In addition to running Rock the Vote Chicago, Lincoln is an active mentor to the next generation of young voters and in the process of starting a leadership development initiative entitled The Marcus Graham Project, which is focused on diverse talent interested in careers in the media, marketing & advertising industry.
Thanks, Lincoln, for all that you do! Look forward to the next Rock the Vote News to highlight more Rock the Vote super-volunteers this fall. |
| TALKING POLITICS 2.0 |
|
GenerationEngage and Rock the Vote are cueing up to launch "Talking Politics 2.0," a series of candidate forums where young adults will speak with Senators, Governors, and members of Congress about the country’s future on the eve of the most important election in their lifetimes.
While much attention is focused on the presidential race this year, Talking Politics 2.0 aims to demonstrate how young adults are engaged not only at the national level this election season, but in local and statewide races.
The series, spanning Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Michigan, and California, will bring young people and political leaders together in person and via iChat for Q&A on issues including economic insecurity, immigration, education, the environment, and the war in Iraq.
The series kicks off with a congressional forum in Miami, FL on August 22nd. Candidates for Florida's 25th Congressional District - Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R) and Joe Garcia (D) - are both confirmed to participate.
Stay tuned for more details on Talking Politics 2.0! |
| LATEST NEWS |
Check out the latest about Rock the Vote and the youth vote in the news.
"The Year the Youth Vote Arrives," The Washington Post, July 25, 2008 The conventional wisdom on certain subjects is so deeply rooted that no amount of evidence disturbs its hold. That's how it is with those dreary predictions that young Americans just won't vote....[but] the evidence is overwhelming that this year the young really will vote in large numbers -- and they just might tip the election.
"Rock the Vote Targets Young Voters' Clout," Rocky Mountain News, August 4, 2008 If Rock the Vote has anything to say about it, young and first-time voters will play a crucial role in the presidential election.
"Rock the Vote, MySpace Start Competition," The New York Times, July 2, 2008 The band that registers the most voters and wins an online poll will open the Rock the Vote party at the Democratic National Convention on August 25 in Denver.
"Young Democrats Work to Energize the Youth Vote," The Orlando Sun Sentinel, July 29, 2008 Barack Obama has the historic distinction of being the first African-American to win his party's nomination, but the deciding factor in this fall's sure-to-be-nail-biting presidential election may not be race, color or creed but age...'When young people vote, Democrats win,' said Matthew McWatters, 23, vice president of the Palm Beach County Young Democrats. That's the common logic, even as both parties strive to secure the ever-elusive, and always under-represented, youth vote.
"Young Republicans Recruit their Generation," The Washington Times, July 29, 2008 The Grand Old Party is trying to attract some young blood to its national convention in September, hoping to offset, as much as possible, the magnetic appeal of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama among young voters.
"Who/What/Where," The Chicago Tribune, July 22, 2008 If you'd rather keep your politics on your lips, check out Stila's Rock the Vote Red lipstick ($17). Twenty-five percent of the first 500 sold will be donated to Rock the Vote. |
